Vision

x

We envisage Hamersley House being a residence that provides a spacious and homely environment in which persons with end of life needs can feel safe and cared for as individuals. Set in landscaped gardens, it will offer a haven – a place of tranquillity which allows space for personal reflection away from the pressures and responsibilities of daily life.

Design

x

We aim to create a building and external surroundings as an integrated whole in the belief that wellbeing is profoundly affected by the environment.

Hamersley House will incorporate features, both architectural and natural, which convey a warm and peaceful environment offering a combination of spaciousness, natural light and intrinsic appeal.

All residents’ rooms will have access to a ‘sensory’ garden providing scent, colour, sound and texture throughout the changing seasons. An extensive variety of trees, flowers and shrubs, as well as an organic vegetable garden and greenhouse facilities, will offer a tranquil space for the enjoyment of residents and their visitors.

We hope to provide a woodland area for both residents and the wider community.

Strategy

x

Hamersley House, as a non profit-making organisation, will be committed to reinvesting all surpluses for the continuous improvement of its services in order to maximise the residents’ quality of life. We aim to enjoy a close working relationship with hospices and providers of specialist end of life care services. We will also work with other healthcare organisations, e.g. NHS, Community Trusts, Marie Curie Cancer Care, Acute Unit Trusts and the wider field of healthcare. We believe that we will make a significant contribution to meeting the needs of those requiring end of life care and respite care and, through working alongside hospices in a spirit of co-operation, we can together strengthen and extend the current provisions of end of life care in Somerset. We will provide advice and information on funding available to those who may be eligible for NHS, Social Services or other forms of support.

x

As part of the work ethos at Hamersley House, our aim will be to bring into the public domain a deeper understanding of, and meaning to, the subject of dying; thus removing some of the anxieties and fears associated with death and the dying process. We believe that inviting children and students to participate in activities, such as art exhibitions, performances in music, poetry and drama, assistance in the garden and the befriending of residents, will benefit and enhance the lives of all concerned.

Objectives

  • To extend the provision of end of life care by offering an alternative choice of how and where those who are in need of care and support can spend the remainder of their lives.

  • To create a building which internally achieves a balance between the provision of care and the comforts of one’s own home.

  • To provide 20 spacious bedrooms, each with an en-suite bathroom and a sitting area with access to the garden.

  • To provide care and support for individuals needing respite care, for which there is currently limited provision.

  • To offer continuity of care on a longer-term basis with the advantages that this gives to individuals unable or not wishing to remain in their own home.

  • To offer services to all adults with a shortened life expectancy irrespective of where they live or their diagnosis.

  • To provide facilities that support relatives and day visitors needing overnight accommodation.
